Accommodations in Sydney
Webster December 22nd, 2006
Malaysia Hall Sydney
Malaysia Hall serves as an accommodation and social center for the student community in Sydney. It is generally preferred by first-year students due to its convenience: availability of Malaysian food and internet connection, while seeing familiar faces all around you.
You are eligible to apply for a room here if you’re a Malaysian citizen, but priority is given to students. Rent for students is $4 or $6 per room per night, non-inclusive of food.

On-campus accommodations
If you’re a first-year student and you couldn’t get a place in Malaysia Hall, the next best thing is staying on-campus. It is very near to the university, mostly just a few minutes walk away. On-campus accommodations also tend to be fully-furnished and maintained by the university, so it’s hassle-free. However, do note that places are quite limited, but priorities are in most cases given to international students.
Most universities have a number of residential colleges that provide meals (mostly non-halal, but vegetarian available). However, most Malay students who choose to reside on-campus do so in university-owned self-catered apartments (no meals provided). Therefore, we will cover more on apartments rather than on residential colleges.

Off-campus accommodations
Off-campus accommodations are usually found from advertisements around university or through real-estate agents. Some university accommodation services and international students services also offer information or help on obtaining off-campus accommodation. Off-campus, students usually rent a room in an apartment, or share a unit with other like-minded students. Some rooms might not be furnished, and you definitely need to cook for yourselves.
Those who choose to reside off-campus are scattered, usually in the suburban areas of Randwick, Kingsford, Eastlakes and Newtown. Rent ranges from below $100 to $200 per room per week, and usually paid monthly, quarterly or half-yearly. You are also required to pay 3 weeks worth of rent as bond when you reside for first time.
